Coming from a Western classical background, I felt lost when it came to taqsim.
Improvisation didn’t come naturally. I was playing lots of notes without meaning, just trying to sound like something, but not really knowing what.
People kept telling me, ‘Just wait—it will come.’
But I was already performing professionally. I didn’t have ten years to wait.
And not being able to play even a simple taqsim made me feel like a fraud on stage.
Then I joined Taqasim Mastery.
Just a few months in, I was asked to play taqasim in different maqamat before a live performance. I didn’t panic. I knew what to do. I moved between maqamat confidently, and introduced each piece with ease.
All that insecurity… it was gone.
Since then, my taqsim journey has grown week by week. Deeper confidence. More joy. And for the first time, I’m discovering a voice that’s uniquely mine—rooted in tradition, expressed on my own terms.
