Hello I’m Maya
I’m a world-leading Arabic music mentor and I love helping Arabic music lovers unlock authentic expression within the tradition.
No endless theory.
No copying others.
Just a clear, empowering path to your own musical voice.
I’ve been playing the Qanun for over 30 years.
The BBC named me the “Queen of the Qanun”.
I’ve been recognized by the UK government and Arts Council England as an Exceptional Talent.
I’ve performed at world-renowned venues like the Royal Albert Hall and WOMAD, and have received multiple international awards for my compositions and performances.
Born in Syria and classically trained since the age of 8, I earned my BA from the prestigious High Institute of Music in Damascus and a Master’s in Ethnomusicology from SOAS University of London—where I also taught Arabic music.
But beyond the accolades, here’s what drives me:
I believe music is one of the most powerful tools to heal the world and your unique expression is a part of that!
Whether you want to play taqsim for personal joy or perform on stage, I would love to guide you start your journey of authentic expression; authentic to you and to the tradition of Arabic music
Over 7 Days, Here’s What We’ll Experience
DAY 1 — FEEL THE SOUND
The Alphabet of Arabic Music
Today you’ll meet the 9 core building blocks behind 99% of the songs you love — the sounds that give Arabic music its depth, color, longing, and life, also called Maqam.
Instead of only admiring them from the outside, you’ll start feeling them in your own ear, your own voice, your own hands — and begin creating melodies with them.
Today we take the 9 core mini scales from Day 1 and begin putting them together to build a maqam — the deeper melodic framework behind Arabic music.
This is where the pieces start to click.
You’ll begin to see how the sounds you’ve learned connect into the larger source of the melodies you love, so Arabic music starts to feel less mysterious and far more understandable from the inside.
Today we step into real music so you can hear how maqam actually lives inside the songs you love — not as theory, not as an exercise, but as feeling, movement, tension, release, and expression.
Experience Arabic music as something living and speakable rather than distant and unreachable
The Mystery of improvisation Is Finally Resolved
There is so much wisdom and practical advice inside Maya’s program—it’s honestly hard to believe she managed to put it all together in one place.
For the first time, I feel like I actually know what I’m doing in an improvisation. I’m not just guessing. I understand where I am and where I’m going next.
My musical ‘accent’ may never disappear completely, but I trust that I’m being understood now. I’ve even had musical conversations with native players and those moments were deeply emotional for me.
I’m forever grateful for this clarity and for this journey.
